If you have been reading the Adventure Geek blog and book reviews then you will know that I am a fan of George Mahood. His adventures are always humorous and this recent read is no exception.
One Mans Journey from Hospital Bed to Ironman Triathlon
Official blurb:-
Operation Ironman follows George Mahood’s hilarious and inspiring journey from a hospital bed to an Ironman triathlon. After major back surgery, George set himself the ultimate challenge –
a 2.4 mile swim,
a 112 mile bike ride,
and a 26.2 mile run,
all to be completed within 16 hours.
He couldn’t swim more than a length of front crawl, he had never ridden a proper road bike, he had not run further than 10k in 18 months… and he had never worn Lycra.
He had FOUR months to prepare.
Could he do it?
My Book Review:
I love George’s style of writing. You can hear his voice in your head as you absorb the content of the pages. This particular book makes you realise that anything is achievable in life and that even though you are super fit you can still have a curveball (such as a spinal tumour) thrown at you. But life is all about attitude. George made the decision to complete an Ironman (just four months after a tumour was removed from his spine). His journey with the training and then the actual event itself was completely inspiring. My brother is completing his first half-ironman in September this year, so I learned lots of what is involved in the event. The things that people put themselves through to achieve a goal is amazing!
Another element of this book was the support of his loyal wife and their relationship, along with his three young children. I don’t want to write any spoilers for this book, but if you are looking for something to read that is both inspiring and highly emotional (in lots of ways), then this is the book for you.
