In 2020, all being well, I will be walking the Japanese Camino called the Kumano Kodo to experience the 88 temples that represent different aspects of life.

But that is over a year away so what will I do for my adventure kicks in 2019? A frown appears on my face as I realise that my funds are not a bottomless pit, my husband would probably like a holiday and if I want to pay for that trip in 2020 then I had a better focus on what pay the bills… my work!

After watching a video by Alistair Humphries it dawned on me that I don’t have to experience the big trips like the Camiño or Kayaking The Norwegian Fjords to get my “adventure hit” there are many micro-adventures that I can enjoy that are right here in the UK.

So, without further ado, here are my ideas adventures for 2019 (all being well with fitness levels).

My Year of #MicroAdventure

Alistair launched a challenge to accomplish a MicroAdventure each month.  He even has a Facebook Group where you can join in the fun and see what other people are doing with their lives.   Below are the MicroAdventures that I am hoping will make 2019 a year full of memories for me.

January – Supermoon

Supermoon Walk at midnight (21st January) – As you may know, I organise a walking club each Monday and Thursday evening.  21st January just happens to be a Monday evening. My goal is to take my walking club on an evening walk so that they can enjoy the supermoon.  The highest point in Northamptonshire is Astbury Hill, so that is going to be my aim for the night.  At the top of the hill, we will enjoy a hot drink and spend some time watching this natural event.  On the night of a “supermoon,” the moon appears larger and brighter than any other time–and they’re surprisingly rare.

In January, I have been invited to visit some friends in Morayshire (Scotland).  I will be setting a geocaching trail and enjoying some time in the Scottish countryside and I can’t wait!

February – Start my Yearly “Rude Names” Challenge

I have downloaded a map of the UK which lists all Britain’s funny, rude and delightfully odd place names, from the Twatts of northern Scotland to the Bottoms of England, via the fabled Pants of Wales.  I will start the challenge in February, when I will visit Yorkshire (there seem to be more fun places in Yorkshire than anywhere else in the UK – I wonder why?).  I will start with The Devils Arse, and see where I go from there.  I will make videos of these and post them on my YouTube Channel throughout the year.

March – Spin the Bottle

One weekend Spin the bottle – Go for a walk and every time I hit a junction, let a bottle decide which way I turn.  On 23rd March 2019 I  will pack my rucksack, including my tent and step out of my front door.  I will then spin the bottle to see which way I will turn.  My intention is to walk 15 miles and then camp up for the night.  I have no idea where I will end up camping for the night, but it will be fun either way.  I may even be camping in someone’s garden!

April – Breakfast in the Woods

We have many woodland areas in Northamptonshire, so why not take a night out and sleep in the woods, have breakfast in the morning then head home?  This is in the diary for 26th April.

May – Sleep in a Bothy

A bothy is a very basic shelter which is used for hikers to escape the elements.  I have discovered one in the middle of no-where in Wales which looks amazing.  I have planned to take a group to the same bothy in August, so the micro-adventure in May will be the scope walk.

The actual bothy that I will be sleeping in!

June – Kayak Down The Thames

I may be calling upon my friend Warren Ferguson to help me out with this one!  It may also not be the Thames, but the adventure in June will certainly involve water and a bit of paddling!  I will keep you informed.

July – Light a campfire on a beach

The first two weeks of July I will be section walking the South West Coastal Path from Minehead to Newquay.  I will make sure that I enjoy a campfire on the beach whilst watching the sun go down whilst on this trail.  I will be releasing the dates in the new year of where I will be during this walk, so if anyone fancies joining me for a few days then feel free to join me.

August – Go skinny dipping/jump in a lake fully clothed.

I have never been skinny dipping (unless going in the hot tub naked counts?).  This is one of those “I will do this on my own, and nobody need join me!” moments!  Hence, I will not be telling people where I am going, but I will certainly write about the experience.

September – Watch the Sunrise & Sunset in One Day over Loch Lomond (always fancied this!)

Inspired by Dan Bell (if you have never seen his videos then please check them out – no only does he have an amazing eye for the best views in Scotland, but he is hilarious and has great screen presence).

October  – Dance on a bar

I have always fancied dancing on a bar in true Coyote Ugly style.  If anyone knows where I can do this then please shout!  I have until October to figure it out!!

November – Visit Abbey Road in London and re-create The Beatles’ cover.

This is something else that I have always wanted to do.  My intention is to go with my best friend Julie and our two daughters to recreate the scene from the Beatles cover, but at the same time enjoy a bit of site seeing in London.

December – Left Blank for Something Christmassy

In all honesty, I am not really sure what I will do for this month, so if you have any ideas then I would certainly welcome your comments.  The only rules will include something to do with Christmas and something that will ignite my adventurous spirit.

Come and join me!

I invite you to join me.  What challenges will you be doing in 2019 that will put a bit of adventure in your life?  It does not have to be expensive and you certainly do not need to have sun for a good time!  We make the excuses of not having enough time, but there is always time for the important things in life.  Rather than watching the TV at night, why not make plans for an adventure of your own?
