What’s Really in My Rucksack?

I’m often asked about the gear I carry on walking trips. What I take depends on where I’m going, but there are a few favourites that come with me whether I’m walking a Camino or heading off with my wild camping kit.

First up is my trusty, made-to-measure Atom Pack, which I’ve had since 2022. I also like keeping my drinks within easy reach, rather than using a hydration bladder, and you’ll nearly always find a Snickers or two tucked away for emergencies. The peanut butter ones are the best, obviously! 😂

Walking poles are another essential, especially on muddy stretches and steep climbs or descents. But there’s a new addition to my kit this time: a mini-speaker, which proved its worth when our little group found ourselves singing along to our favourite tunes on a long, winding road. 🎶

My biggest tip? Keep the things you reach for most somewhere easy to get to. There’s no point burying your favourite snacks at the bottom of your rucksack!

That’s a few of my favourites, rather than my full packing list. Now I’m curious: what’s the one thing you wouldn’t head out hiking without?
