Overview & Summary
Escape to the Lake District for a magical weekend inspired by the world of Beatrix Potter.
This two-night Adventure Geek getaway blends beautiful trails, calming lake scenery, cosy
accommodation options, and a sprinkle of childhood nostalgia.
We’ll be based around Bowness-on-Windermere, giving you the perfect mix of lakeside charm
and easy access to the fells. On Saturday, we head out on the Beatrix Potter Trail — a
gorgeous loop of woodland paths, lakeside views, ferry crossings, summits, and storybook
countryside. We finish the day with an optional visit to Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s beloved
home, now cared for by the National Trust.
Sunday is a gentler pace with a lake cruise to Ash Landing, a pretty walk to Wray Castle,
and time to explore the grounds before drifting back across the water via Ambleside. Think
fresh air, good company, and that lovely sense of adventure you only get in the Lakes.
Whether you’re joining us as a member, a leader, or a first-time Explorer, this trip is all

Is This For Me?
This weekend is designed for walkers who love a good adventure, a bit of Beatrix Potter magic,
and a friendly group vibe. If you’re happy on your feet for a few hours and don’t mind some hills,
you’ll feel right at home.
This trip is perfect for you if:
- You enjoy walking 8–10 miles in a day at a steady, social pace.
- You’re happy with hills, woodland paths and uneven terrain (with regular breaks).
- You like the idea of exploring the world of Beatrix Potter, Hill Top and Wray Castle.
- You’re excited by a mix of walking, lake cruises and stunning Lake District scenery.
- You’re comfortable arranging your own travel and accommodation.
- You enjoy being part of a supportive, good-humoured group rather than racing ahead.
- You’re looking for a weekend to switch off, get outside and boost your wellbeing.
It might not be right for you if:
- Walking 8–10 miles with hills would feel too much, even with stops.
- You struggle with stiles, steps, tree roots or rough, uneven paths.
- You’re looking for a technical mountain challenge or very fast-paced hiking.
- You prefer a fully packaged trip where everything is included (travel, food, entry fees).
- You are unable to be on your feet for a few hours at a time.
If you’re unsure, just ask – I’m always happy to help you decide if this adventure is a good fit for you.
Did You Know?
- Beatrix Potter bought Hill Top in 1905 with the profits from The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Many of her illustrations were sketched right in the garden you’ll see.
- She left over 4,000 acres of land, farms and cottages to the National Trust, helping to protect huge areas of the Lake District.
- The ferry across Windermere follows a route that’s been used for over 500 years — it’s just a little faster now!
- Wray Castle isn’t actually a real castle. It was built in the 1840s as a dramatic holiday home for a retired surgeon.
- Beatrix Potter spent a childhood holiday at Wray Castle — the trip that sparked her lifelong love of the Lake District.
- Windermere is England’s largest natural lake, stretching over 10 miles from end to end.
- Many of Potter’s famous animal characters were inspired by real pets. Peter Rabbit was based on her own rabbit, Benjamin Bouncer.
- Bowness-on-Windermere began as a tiny fishing village. The woodland above the town still feels wonderfully peaceful.
- The Lake District’s dry stone walls could stretch further than the Great Wall of China if placed end to end.
