7 Days. 100 Miles. One epic lap of the Isle of Man.

The Raad ny Foillan (Way of the Gull) is a 100-mile circular route that showcases the very best of the Isle of Man — from coastal cliffs and Viking castles to sleepy villages and wild open landscapes. You’ll walk it all across 7 consecutive days, with comfortable accommodation and expert support every step of the way.

Day 1 – Douglas to Castletown (~16 miles)

We start from the Sea Terminal in Douglas, following cliff paths and quiet lanes to the ancient capital of Castletown — home to the legendary Castle Rushen.

Day 2 – Castletown to Port Erin (~14 miles)

A dramatic and scenic day passing Port St Mary and the famous Sound — with views over to the Calf of Man. We finish in the seaside town of Port Erin.

Day 3 – Port Erin to Peel (~15 miles)

A wild, hilly day with big climbs and even bigger views! We pass Milner’s Tower, coastal ridges, and finish beside the imposing Peel Castle.

Day 4 – Peel to Jurby (~14 miles)

A change of pace along the island’s western edge. Flatter terrain, open skies, and Viking crosses in Kirk Michael, ending near the quirky Jurby Transport Museum.

Day 5 – Jurby to Ramsey (~15 miles)

The most remote stretch of the route, with vast dunes, nature reserves, and long coastal straights. We arrive in Ramsey — the island’s second largest town.

Day 6 – Ramsey to Laxey via Maughold (~15 miles)

Challenging and rewarding! We take on cliff paths and ridgelines, visiting the peaceful village of Maughold before ending in Laxey, home of the world’s largest waterwheel.

Day 7 – Laxey to Douglas (~13 miles)

Our final day! We follow wooded glens and coastal paths back into Douglas, completing the full circuit of the island on foot — a true sense of achievement.

A real challenge — but totally achievable with the right mindset and preparation

Walking the full Raad ny Foillan is a truly rewarding experience, but it’s no gentle stroll. This is a moderate to challenging walking holiday, best suited to hikers who have good fitness and are comfortable walking 15–20 miles per day over varied and sometimes tough terrain.

You’ll encounter:

  • Cliff-top paths with steep ups and downs
  • Coastal tracks that can be rocky, uneven or exposed
  • Woodland glens, farmland, beaches and quiet lanes
  • Occasional steep sections with loose footing
  • Open, remote stretches with limited shelter

We highly recommend doing some training walks in advance — and you’ll be invited to join Adventure Geek training hikes throughout the year to help you prepare.

We walk as a group and support each other along the way, but you should feel confident in your ability to walk for 6–8 hours a day (including breaks), across 7 consecutive days.

What You’ll Need:

  • Comfortable walking boots or trail shoes with good grip
  • Waterproofs and lightweight layers (Manx weather is unpredictable!)
  • A reasonable level of hill fitness and stamina
  • A positive attitude and a love for adventure!

If you’re unsure whether this trip is right for your fitness level, feel free to get in touch — we’ll happily advise and support you in preparing.

The Isle of Man is full of surprises — here’s what you need to know before you go!

The Isle of Man may feel familiar… but it has its own unique identity, rules, and traditions. Here’s some key info to help you prepare:

📶 1. Data Roaming Charges Can Apply

  • The Isle of Man is not part of the UK mobile network — many UK providers treat it as international roaming.
  • Turn off data roaming before you disembark to avoid unexpected charges.
  • Use free Wi-Fi where possible and download maps in advance.

💷 2. They Have Their Own Currency

  • The island uses the Manx Pound, which is pegged to the British Pound (£).
  • You can use British notes and coins everywhere.
  • But Manx money isn’t accepted back in the UK — so be sure to spend or swap it before you leave!

🛂 3. It’s Not Part of the UK or EU

  • The Isle of Man is a self-governing British Crown Dependency with its own laws and parliament.
  • No passport is required for UK citizens, but you may need photo ID for the ferry.

🚑 4. NHS Cover Doesn’t Apply

  • The Isle of Man has its own healthcare system — not covered by the NHS.
  • We strongly recommend travel insurance, just in case.

🌦️ 5. The Weather is Wildly Unpredictable

  • The Manx weather can change quickly — expect wind, sun, and rain all in one day!
  • Bring layers, waterproofs, and sturdy footwear.

👋 6. Say Hello to the Fairies

  • It’s traditional to say “Hello Fairies!” when crossing the Fairy Bridge on the island.
  • Legend says it brings good luck — and Ken will absolutely make sure you don’t forget!
