When They Don’t Need You Anymore

There’s something rather strange about the moment when people don’t need us quite as much anymore.

A few Adventure Geek members have waved their children off to university recently. They’re incredibly proud, of course, but they’ve also talked about feeling a little lost. After years of being needed, suddenly life looks a bit different.

I’m having my own, much smaller, version of that this weekend. Back in 2024, nine almost-strangers joined me to walk their first section of the Camino Francés. They came back in 2025 for section two, and this weekend they’re heading off again, continuing from Logroño to León.

But this time, they’re going without me.

I’ve held their hands for the first two sections. Now they’ve got their wings. Perhaps being needed less isn’t something to be sad about. Perhaps it’s actually a sign that we’ve done our job well.

I’ll still be following the Camino crew virtually every step of the way, though. I’m not letting go that easily! 😂
