🏰 Corfe Castle Weekend – Red Arrows, Ridge Walks & Hidden Gems
After seven incredible years of running this trip, Corfe Castle never fails to deliver a magical experience, and this year may just have been my favourite yet. With surprise air displays, hidden lakes, coastal cliffs, tea rooms, and the ever-watchful Corfe Castle towering in the background, it was a weekend packed with unforgettable moments.
Day One – Steam Trains, Red Arrows & Old Harry Rocks
We began our adventure from the National Trust Car Park in Corfe Castle, Dorset, a site of immense historical significance. The village itself is steeped in history, with the dramatic ruins of Corfe Castle dating back to the 11th century. Originally built by William the Conqueror, the castle was a key stronghold during the English Civil War before being partially demolished by Parliamentarian forces in 1646. Today, its jagged silhouette dominates the Purbeck landscape.
Before setting off, many of us grabbed a bite from the Corfe Castle Village Bakery, which was hard to resist with its delicious smells wafting into the street.
We wandered through the charming village, passing Corfe Castle Station, part of the Swanage Railway, a beautifully preserved heritage steam railway. Walking through the station felt like stepping back in time, complete with the sound of steam hissing and the nostalgic whistle echoing through the valley.
Then came our first challenge: the steep climb up to the ridge. From the top, we were treated to a spectacular display from the Red Arrows around 11:30 am. It was completely unexpected, loop-the-loops, heart shapes in the sky, and those iconic red smoke trails. A truly unforgettable moment.
We continued towards Studland, passing elegant houses and spotting a wedding taking place in the picturesque village, adding a celebratory feel to the day.
Despite occasional drizzle, the weather was warm and mild. I led the group to a hidden cliff-edge viewpoint through the bushes, where the white chalk cliffs and gliding yachts created a stunning backdrop. The brave among us posed for daring photos with the drop behind them!
We then made our way to the iconic Old Harry Rocks, a collection of chalk formations that mark the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Steeped in myth and natural history, they’re a real highlight of the Dorset coast.
After soaking up the views, we climbed back up to the ridge and descended into Swanage, just in time for a second air show – this time with three Spitfires, complete with coloured smoke trails and aerial acrobatics. Goosebumps!
The day ended in a local pub with a well-earned pint. Some of the group explored Swanage further, while others hopped on the steam train or open-topped bus back to Corfe. We reunited later at the Red Lion Pub for a relaxed, celebratory dinner.
Day Two – Tea, Trails & a Hidden Lake
No rain! A good sign!
We set off from Corfe around 10 am for another ridge walk, a different ridge this time, with sweeping views over the valley to the west and Sandbanks and Poole Harbour to the east. It was another scenic route with plenty of photo stops and woodland charm.
The descent took us through forest paths and across a field of very friendly cows before we paused at mile 2.3 for an essential treat – tea and homemade cake at The Cake Off Tea Room in Harmans Cross. So good!
Our walk continued along a wooded trail, and I took the group onto a moss-covered side path. Surrounded by ivy, holly and ancient trees, it leads to a hidden lake that appears like a secret oasis. It’s one of my favourite spots in the area.
We returned via Norden Campsite, where we met some curious goats, sheep, and proud peacocks. Sadly, the old milk vending machine was gone – a small disappointment, but the atmosphere of the place remained as delightful as ever.
The final stretch gave us one last breathtaking view of Corfe Castle, standing tall and dramatic on the hill. It was the perfect end to a memorable weekend.
Until Next Time…
This trip is a highlight in the Adventure Geek calendar, and every year brings new memories. A huge thank you to everyone who came along – both familiar faces and first-timers. From chalk cliffs to castle ruins, Red Arrows to tea and cake, Corfe truly delivered once again.
