When the Weather Changes, Community Doesn’t

Some weeks remind you that adventure isn’t always about reaching the summit.

Last weekend we took on the Malvern Hills in soaring temperatures. Ten peaks, endless climbs and enough sunshine to make even the most enthusiastic walker question their life choices. Thankfully, an ice-cold drink and a pastry in the town of Malvern restored both energy levels and morale, even if only temporarily.

Just as we recovered from that challenge, the weather had other ideas. Amber heat warnings became red warnings – only the second Red Extreme Heat Warning ever issued in the UK – and suddenly our carefully planned walking calendar was turned upside down.

But something rather lovely happened.

Instead of staying at home, people still came along.

Walks became evenings in the pub. Coffee and cake replaced muddy boots. A planned stroll transformed into a jazz night. It wasn’t what any of us had expected, but it reminded me that Adventure Geek has never really been just about walking.

It’s about the people.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt over the years is that friendship doesn’t stop just because the weather isn’t playing ball. In fact, sometimes it’s during those unexpected changes of plan that the best conversations happen. Nobody minded swapping hiking boots for coffee cups, and there was certainly no shortage of laughter.

Another highlight of the week was welcoming three fantastic new volunteer walk leaders. Giving up an evening in that heat to sit through training isn’t anyone’s idea of an easy night, yet Julie, Janet and Annette were more than happy to do just that. Gillian also joined us and somehow found the energy to make what might just have been the best strawberry pavlova I’ve ever tasted! It was another reminder that our community is built by people who quietly give their time simply because they care.

As we head into another busy week, I hope the weather behaves itself a little more kindly. But even if it doesn’t, I know we’ll find another Plan B. Whether that’s a walk, a café, a pub garden or somewhere completely unexpected, the important thing is that we continue spending time together.

Because in the end, it’s never really been about the destination.

It’s about the people you share the journey with.
