🕊️ A Pilgrimage with a Purpose
The Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of St James, is a network of ancient pilgrimage routes that lead to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain. Legend has it that the remains of the apostle Saint James are buried there, making it one of the most important Christian pilgrimages since medieval times.
🍇 Welcome to La Rioja – Wine, History & Hospitality
The region of La Rioja is world-famous for its rich red wines, but it also boasts a deep cultural heritage. As you walk through vineyards, medieval villages, and Roman roads, you’re literally stepping through history. Towns like Estella, Viana, and Puente la Reina have been welcoming pilgrims for over a thousand years!
⚔️ Alto del Perdón
You’ll climb the Alto del Perdón (Mount of Forgiveness), home to the iconic iron sculpture of medieval pilgrims. According to local folklore, this was a place where forgiveness could be found—not just for sins, but for the body’s weariness. The panoramic views from here are a true Camino highlight.
🍷 The Free Wine Fountain!
Yes, it’s real! At Bodegas Irache, you’ll find a wine fountain built especially for pilgrims. It’s a modern nod to the ancient tradition of monasteries offering hospitality—and sustenance—to weary travellers.
