Scottish Adventure – The Assynt Highlands Experience
Price range: £860.00 through £970.00
There are places in Scotland that are beautiful.
And then there is Assynt.
This is a land where mountains rise straight from loch-studded moorland, where ancient sandstone towers glow in the evening light, and where the Atlantic crashes against white-sand beaches beneath vast Highland skies.
During this week in the far north-west, we’ll base ourselves in the harbour village of Lochinver and step each day into one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Britain. From the unmistakable ridge of Suilven to the sweeping arcs of Quinag, from wild coastal paths at Clachtoll to the rugged heights of Stac Pollaidh, this is a journey through some of the oldest rock on Earth — sculpted by ice, wind and time.
Expect long days. Big views. Proper mountain terrain.
Expect laughter at summits. Cake and whisky moments.
Expect to feel small in the best possible way.
Assynt isn’t just a hiking trip.
It’s a week of challenge, camaraderie, and standing somewhere that makes your heart beat a little louder.
Assynt & Coigach Mountain Adventure

Tucked away in the far north-west Highlands, Assynt and Coigach are unlike anywhere else in Britain.
Ancient rock formations, isolated peaks rising straight out of loch-strewn landscapes, sweeping Atlantic views,
and a feeling of true wilderness.
This is not mainstream Scotland. This is bold, quiet, elemental Scotland.
You’ll spend the week tackling some of the finest Corbetts in the country, guided throughout, with one dedicated
geology day alongside Andy, a local Ranger whose knowledge brings this extraordinary landscape to life.

Full Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival in Assynt
Arrive in the Assynt area and settle into the accommodation. Depending on arrival times, there may be the option
for a short local leg-stretch or coastal wander to loosen up after travel.
In the evening we’ll do a welcome briefing, kit check and run through the week ahead.
Day 2 – Suilven Summit
731m | Approx. 20km | Long approach day
Suilven may only stand at 731 metres, but its remarkable outline makes it one of Scotland’s most recognisable
mountains.
We make an early start from the Glencanisp car park for the long but rewarding walk-in. The approach builds
anticipation as the mountain slowly dominates the skyline.
The final ridge is airy and dramatic, with exceptional views across Assynt’s cnoc-and-loch landscape and out
towards the Atlantic.
Day 3 – Quinag Traverse
Three Corbett summits | Full mountain day
Quinag is a magnificent and complex mountain with three Corbett summits. The full traverse of all three is one
of the finest hill days in Scotland. If the full round is too demanding, the ascent of the first summit (Spidean Coinich) makes for a superb shorter option — relatively straight forward yet offering spectacular rewards for the effort.
Expect dramatic ridges, rugged corries and expansive views stretching from the Atlantic coast to the far northern
peaks. This is classic Highland mountain terrain – wild, varied and hugely satisfying.
Day 4 – Clachtoll Coastal Walk with the Ranger
Geology & coastline | Gentler day
A gentler day exploring the Clachtoll coastline with Andy, the local Ranger. This relaxed and engaging day
explores the area’s extraordinary geology, wildlife, and history — from ancient stromatolites and evidence of
Europe’s largest meteorite impact, to traces of crofting life and the Iron Age Clachtoll Broch.
Along the way, enjoy opportunities for birdwatching and sea-watching, with chances to spot otters, breeding
waders, and even passing cetaceans. A day that beautifully connects the natural and human story of Assynt’s
remarkable coastline.
Day 5 – Breabag & the Caves of Assynt
Quartzite ridge & limestone caves
Breabag may lack the dramatic silhouette of neighbouring peaks, but it offers huge geological interest.
We pass the famous Bone Caves before making a steady ascent. The route then heads north along a rough quartzite
ridge before descending past more limestone caves towards Inchnadamph.
A rugged and fascinating day showcasing Assynt’s unique geology.
Day 6 – Ben Mòr Coigach & Sgùrr an Fhìdhleir
Shorter but steep | Classic horseshoe
Ben More Coigach rises like a great sea-wall above the surrounding landscape.
This fantastic horseshoe route follows the airy Garbh Choireachan ridge with sweeping views in all directions
before ascending the pointed peak of the Fiddler, Sgùrr an Fhìdhleir.
Prominent as a massive triangle of rock when viewed from Stac Pollaidh, its north face drops dramatically
beneath the summit. A bold and exhilarating mountain day.
Day 7 – Stac Pollaidh
612m | Short, steep ascent | Optional scrambling
Climb Stac Pollaidh, a short but steep ascent with panoramic views of Suilven and Coigach. The main summit cairn
is easily reached, with optional scrambles along the rugged crest.
Optional beach stop at Achmelvich.
Day 8 – Departure
Relaxed breakfast and departures throughout the morning. Assynt has a habit of staying with you long after you
leave.

Let Me Introduce Your Guides
One of the best parts of an Adventure Geek trip is knowing you’re in safe, capable hands — and this week you really
are. You’ll be supported by two professional guides who bring calm leadership, deep experience, and a genuinely caring
approach to the mountains.
Together, Ken and Sam create the perfect balance: expert local knowledge and route choice, with friendly group support and
steady encouragement. The aim is always the same — to keep things safe, enjoyable and memorable, while helping you feel
confident every step of the way.
Sam Armstrong
Mountain Leader
Sam Armstrong is the Mountain Leader for this trip and brings a warm, supportive presence to the group throughout the week.
Sam is the WALX Master for WALX Derwent and Dales and has worked in the outdoor fitness and wellbeing space since 2008. With a
background in personal training and sports massage therapy, she recognised early on the powerful benefits that moving outdoors
can have on both physical and mental health.
Inspired by this, Sam built a thriving walking and wellbeing community, delivering regular outdoor sessions to people of all
abilities. Her approach is inclusive, encouraging and quietly confidence-building, helping people feel capable and supported,
whatever their starting point.
On this trip, Sam’s role is to provide Mountain Leader support, look after group wellbeing, and ensure everyone feels
safe, settled and at ease. She has a natural ability to put people at ease, especially on longer or more challenging days, and
is known for her calm reassurance, good humour and genuine care for the group.
Ken Hames
Lead Guide
Ken Hames is the Lead Guide for this trip and brings over 25 years of experience guiding in the mountains around Lago di Garda.
Ken Hames is Mountain Leader Winter and cut his teeth in the highlands of Scotland as both an instructor and leader of UK Special Forces Mountain Troops. He is also half Scottish which equips him well to understand the locals! Ken has operated in Scotland and Wester Ross for over 40 years and is very familiar with all its character and idiosyncrasies. He often is quoted as telling travellers, that Lochinvar .and the mountains nearby, represent one of the most dramatic and beautiful landscapes on earth, with sparse population and a unique feeling of wildness.
As a bonus ken is able to talk about mountains, flowers and fauna peculiar to the Scottish highlands and bring the walks to life with his extensive knowledge.
