If you have been following my blog for a while then you will already know that I am a fan of George Mahood.  His style of writing suits my personality and I completely appreciate his sense of humour (unlike Bill Bryson which I struggle to get my head around at times).  This book is full of laugh out loud moments and I was also totally inspired to walk the Inca Trail in Peru after devouring this book.

Travels with Rachel - South America by George Mahmood

Knee-deep in a swamp in the depths of the Bolivian jungle, hunting for anacondas in a pair of sandals, it occurred to George that perhaps he should have booked that all-inclusive honeymoon to the Maldives after all.

Join George and Rachel on their hilarious journey through the wilds of Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, as they climb volcanoes, fish for piranhas, trek through the Amazon rainforest, take death-defying bus rides, sample some of the continent’s strangest delicacies, and try to get to Machu Picchu.

Armed only with a basic knowledge of Spanish, small backpacks, and bags of enthusiasm, they set off together on what promised to be a life-changing adventure.

My Review

A short, fun and extremely easy to read the book about George and Rachel (before they had children).  Some of the stories that he tells is hard to make up.  I am smiling to myself as I am writing this review and recalling the adventures that they had.  The tale of the Anaconda search (if you do not laugh out loud at that bit with the silly wellies that they had to wear with cut out toes and Rachel nearly stepping on the Anaconda then you do not deserve to read this book). The attempts to get to train stations or busses or ticket windows in time, and the many different vehicles they “travelled in” (including a milk float!) was utterly brilliant.
